What is it about corn syrup that so many companies use it in their food & beverage, despite health concerns?

Talking about the high fructose stuff here.

Speaking from cooking R&D, high fructose is a constant source of sweetness. It mixes well with most other sugars, flavorings (not savory) and dyes. It will take on the taste and flavors of that which it is mixed with. It handles higher heat needed for thorough absorbancy without scortching or drying out quickly. Most importantly it has fewer empty calories than sugar from beats, cane etc.
2 :
its cheap and blends well. They could care less about it being the leading cause of obesity, as long as they make a profit. Most of it is also genetically modified, making it even more questionable.
3 :
i dont think they care about society...they just want to make money.
4 :
The alternative to high fructose corn syrup is sucrose, or sugar. Since they have the same composition (50% fructose 50% glucose), companies choose to use the least expensive product, which in the united states, where corn is our main crop, high fructose corn syrup is the cheapest. Health risks from high fructose corn syrup are debatable. Since the caloric content is exactly the same, the real debate is whether free fructose (which might not be too different between HFCS and sucrose sweetened products) is digested in a way that affects signals in our body that regulate food intake.
5 :
I would think that one of these days that they will care. Soon there will come a day when they have no one to sell it to, seeing as they will all die from diabetes or heart disease. There seems to be a huge shift in the country towards healthier eating habits, for which I am grateful. I don't buy anything that has corn syrup, sugar, sucrose, sucralose, dextrose or those other well disguised words for pure useless calories within the first five ingredients

Is heating food, drink, etc. in a microwave unhealthy or dangerous to health

Is heating food, drink, etc. in a microwave unhealthy or dangerous to health?
I wonder if some of the microwave radiation goes to the food, drink, etc. being heated in a microwave. If that is the case, the practice might be unhealthy or dangerous to health and must be stopped in order to prevent any unhealthy or untoward incident to the body.

May b good queston - That what some believe but may just heat.
2 :
I asked a similar question (Who owns a microwave?) and this problem just didn't seem to either exist or worry people. We've just thrown ours out and there are some I know who have done the same but we're probably a mad minority. Either way I've far more worktop space now it's gone
3 :
Well, some of the radiation from the microwave gets into your food, but it's mostly harmless. Make sure your not microwaving foods in a plastic container, they are known to send off small radiation waves into your food, and that is dangerous. So, if you just microwave your food in a stone container or anything else besides plastic, your fine. The heat waves that come out of a microwave contain Co2, which is actually quite harmless, but if you over do it, it can be. So, every once and a while, feel free to turn on your stove and warm up your food. :) Hope this helps, and if you have any more questions feel free to contact me through e-mail. Have a good one.
4 :
No, it is not unhealthy or dangerous.
5 :
The radiation in a microwave is a 4 inch radio wave. It is very similar to what police use for radar. Its heating ability was discovered at Amana during world War 2, when they were working on RADAR. Someone shot a wave across the room and melted a candy bar. In your oven the waves are trapped by the metal. If the oven were to be run without any food in it, you would see sparks as the waves go back to the magnetron and cause damage. They had no food to warm up. It causes the molecules in the food to vibrate faster. It is changed into heat. The type of radiation is not ionizing, the dangerous kind. It might cause a burn if it got out, but the oven is set to turn off if opened. The food only gets hot.
6 :
Nope. Perfectly safe. Microwaves are dangerous to living tissue because they can a) cook it and b) degrade DNA, which could lead to replication errors and result in mutations/cancers/really bad karaoke. Since your food is already dead (at least I'm hoping it is), there is no danger. Think of microwaves as light. If you left a box out in the sun all day, then closed the box, it would not retain any of the light. Same thing when you nuke your food. Radiation is not a particle (well, it is but in the same genre as photons and that's not important right now) it is a form of energy like heat, electricity, light, and good soul music. Your food is safe and, as long as it was made in the past two decades, so is your microwave oven.
7 :
I read in a report that Hitler actually banned the use of micro wave ovens because it killed all of the nutritional value in the food. I don't know how true it is but it was on a TV documentary, too

Older people from any walk of life have some knowledge as well as some stupidity to offer. Those with experience are generally more knowledgeable than those without.
3 :
Also they value hate of America, the same country that allowed these smoked out old people to lead a good life is the country they hate the most.
4 :
The music!!!
5 :
People with very little education tend to put people in little boxes and generalize about them. You really need to get out into the world and educate yourself.
6 :
I really dont know. I dont associate with many older hippies.
7 :
I guess they promoted, free love, do whatever you want kind of attitude,,they made changes at the time that seemed creative..but when you look back they look like goons..I was about 17 when they came to life and I can tell you..they made things change..people thought I was a hippie but I never went the extreme..I guess they had their purpose at the time..but I would say they took class away and brought in arrogance..But everyone loves the.. "freedom of speech" they promoted that is still going to this day....
8 :
They instilled a sense of peace and love. How silly of them...
9 :
I THINK YOU ALL GOT A LOT MORE TO WORRY ABOUT THAN MAKING FUN OF OLD HIPPIES =LIKE MAYBE PROTECTING YOUR RIGHTS BEFORE OUR LOVELY GOVERNMENT TAKES THEM ALL AWAY SO LAUGH AND HAVE FUN AND DONT FORGET TO LAUGH WHEN YOU GO TO BUY GAS AND FOOD IN THE NEAR FUTURE

Health Foods are not FDA approved. Do you think they are completely safe

Health Foods are not FDA approved. Do you think they are completely safe?

More people are looking for natural remedies to cure ailments without a prescription from a medical doctor and without getting a prescription from a pharmacy. Do you trust the companies who manufacture the supplements, herbs, etc.? Do you think you are being conned or is it the power of the mind to heal or do you think this is the way we should medically handle our problems with sickness? Please rate from 1 - 10 your trust in a health food store. One being the least trusting and 10 is completely trusts. Thanks for any honest opinions.

I do trust FDA more than those quacks ! Most the time FDA is right but sometimes they made wrong decision too that means there is some interesting reliable people even if they criticize FDA I do trust doctor Mercola !
2 :
Vitamin/supplements/health foods are regulated by the FDA as food not drugs. This means the items are presumed safe until proven otherwise. Drug are presumed dangerous until proven safe. Some basic manufacturing requirements have just been implemented by the FDA for vitamins. Vitamins cannot claim to cure any disease.
3 :
You need to watch the movie Food Inc. It exposes the truth about how well the FDA and the USDA monitor and protect the food and medicine sold in most grocery stores. It is disturbing. You are better off buying organic foods and supplements. Whole Foods is a store I trust for groceries, but a food supplement I take and give my family called Juice Plus can only be bought online at www.juiceplusblend.com. It is NSF certified. NSF International, The Public Health and Safety Company is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, and is the world leader in standards development, product certification, education, and risk-management for public health and safety. So since Juice Plus is NSF certified I know it has the 17 fruits, vegetables, and grains that it claims it has. Besides that it is clinically shown to reduce oxidative stress, protect DNA, and help support a healthy immune system. I hope this information helps you

If you think the bible is enough of God's word, you're right; it's enough to send you to hell. Always ask yourself: what will result? What shall result from any cause, any act of will?
2 :
Any food CAN be healthy, if eating in an appropriate serving.
3 :
What is so unhealthy about eggs and olive oil? "'I am very happy with eggs," Ruth Kava, PhD, RD, director of nutrition for the American Council on Science and Health, tells WebMD. 'Eggs have a high nutritional value, an excellent quality of protein, are only 70 to 80 calories each, and are not high in fat.'" http://www.medicinenet.com/script/main/art.asp?articlekey=60421 "When choosing fats, olive oil is a healthy choice. Olive oil contains monounsaturated fat, a healthier type of fat that can lower your risk of heart disease by reducing the total and low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or 'bad') cholesterol levels in your blood." -- Katherine Zeratsky, R.D., L.D., Mayo Clinic nutritionist http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/food-and-nutrition/AN01037

Jesus walked on dinosaurs.
6 :
Nonsense. Now wasabi sauce, on the other hand...
7 :
well what did you expect in an ad? to show you a warning sign and a disclaimer?
8 :
You can also expect to find over millions of people that think gay marriage will end everything we hold dear (ie sanctity of marriage, families, grandmothers)
9 :
I have some mayonnaise with healing powers.
10 :
That's ridiculous. The real health food is high fructose corn syrup. Fortunately, it's in just about everything, and therefore everything is a health food. It's made from corn, so you know it's good for you! *This answer paid for by everybody who profits off of corn syrup.
11 :
Irksome has a point. Wasabi sauce is enough to make a person swear off food completely and given the contents of most food these days, that's gotta be a good thing

Is it against health code to sell food in commercial kitchen in a basement

Is it against health code to sell food in commercial kitchen in a basement.?
I know regulations probably vary from state to state. I have an unfinished basement (new build) with plumbing. I am considering constructing a commercial kitchen for small scale food biz.

Ask local health department. In the Grat Lakes area, most states will work with you--especially if you get their input while constructing the kitchen.
2 :
As long as you pass all the health codes I don't see why location is a problem. But being in basement may be a bit hard to pass the fire codes, maybe

Is coffee considered a sin in any religions because this jewish doctor said it's health food?

Mormons reckon it is a drug.
2 :
Hey Charlie Sheen, how's your day?
3 :
Drinking coffee is not a sin.
4 :
i wouldn't call it a sin. but it's not a health food either. mormons aren't the only ones that call it a drug, science does too.
5 :
Coffee is not listed as "sinful" in an religion i have studied. However, the OVERUSE of Coffee (specifically, caffeine) is considered sinful by many sects or all religions. There are some medical reason why a person should avoid coffee, and some recent studies have shown that those people who are "addicted" to Coffee (gotta have the first cup before they can function) do not actually become MORE stimulated for the day, but just manage to bring themselves back to normal, after a night time of caffeine-less "funk". this is sign of a TRUE addiction -- you can't function normally until you had a "fix". In this case, the use of coffee/caffeine WOULD be considered sinful, as it prevents you from properly focusing the actions of your day towards a Godly life.
6 :
Not many calories in it, and it is supposed to have some useful enzymes; but some people are "sensitive" to caffeine, and apparently "dark roast" has some extra chemicals that give some people trouble.
7 :
@;'Is coffee considered a sin in any religions because this jewish doctor said it's health food? ANYTHING YOU DRINK CLOSE TO SCALDING HOT IS DAMAGING TO YOUR INTERIOR; IT'S NOT COVERED WITH SKIN. WHO DRINKS HOT COFFEE IN THE SUMMER-TIME? NUTS! COFFEE INTERFERES WITH YOUR MEDICINES. YOU DEFEAT THE PURPOSE. DOES THIS MAKE SENSE
