After living off government assistance for a year, shouldn't the citizens that take money from the government have to give back somehow? Can't they find some tasks for the able bodied people who are living off of other tax-payers to do. Seriously, they could contribute 6-8 hours a day of community service? Maybe that would inspire them to better their lives.

Once off of assistance and working, they should pay back every cent by surrendering their income tax checks until what they used is completely paid off. That's what they do to dads who owe child support.

I agree with all of you. How come AIG and the auto industry etc. receive money and are expected to pay it back. On the other hand people are give free housing, food, transportation, healthcare etc. but aren't excpected to pay it back at all. These people have 1 vote like the rest of us, doesn't seem fair to me. These people, along with our socialist prez, are going to bankrupt this country on purpose just to say that capitalism doesn't work...Cloward and Piven, look it up...

I grew up on welfare- medicaid, foodstamps, wic because my single mom was disabled. I was raised to take responsibility for my actions and to always do the right thing. I was sickened by the abuses of the program that I saw- the druggies, the people who lied about incomes, the people driving fancy new cars, or even blowing their foodstamps on junk-food. Without anyone telling me to (in fact, it was discouraged), I wanted to join the military to in some way pay back for the opportunities and freedoms I had. I think community service is a great idea- it helps to in some small way pay back the taxpayer for supporting the people on welfare, and it gives people a feeling of accomplishment and self-respect by people improving their community. With that, you can build more. Without it, you're more likely to just sit and leech. Giving everything with no strings attached fosters laziness. Why work, if you're getting everything handed to you? Especially if it pays better than a minimum wage job! There should also be mandatory training classes to improve job marketability.

The democrats have created this underclass of irresponsible people by instituting policies that are designed to trap them there. The welfare programs have taught these people that they are victims and they do not need to be responsible citizens. That is the indisputable fact of what created the inner city poverty and the tragedy that it is. I realize that many on the left are not thinkers so they see poverty and blame slavery or the evil white man. We have clowns in congress talking about reparations and apologies for slavery instead of grabbing these people by the collar and telling them to stand up and take responsibility. I believe they do it intentionally in order to keep these people down so that they can use them as a weapon to dismantle free enterprise and capitalism. Most liberals have been conditioned to not actually think, which is part of the reason the liberals never really understand the root causes. They do not have the ability to use cause/effect analysis. I used to believe the liberal spin until I started working in the inner city and saw the light. The issue is liberal mandated irresponsibility and it is truly sad to see what democrats are doing to these people for political purposes. There is a reason so many liberals who actually believe the spin are from lily white areas. They never see the truth. Several who have answered your question used the old tired no jobs excuse, but as one who is in the middle of it every day, there are jobs. the issue is that most of these people have disqualified themselves from working for any reputable company and when they do manage to get a job, many of them don't show up regularly, steal, or just do not work hard. The unpublicized truth is that when they do get a job, many of them have their wages garnished to pay for past acts of irresponsibility. The garnishments severely reduce their take home pay and the cycle cannot be broken. When i get a young man out of the projects and he shows up, works hard and wants to make something of himself, i help him every way i can. The problem is those people are the minority who have not been trapped into the liberal quick sand of irresponsibility and victimization.. When i saw the light and stopped believing the liberal spin, i realized that what theses people need is a lesson in personal responsibility. They need tough love. Typical liberals want to treat them like children and make excuses, not realizing that they are enabling the very behavior they want to correct. The liberal does not believe that these people can make anything of themselves so they use the same tactics with them that they do with children and hide behind compassion when they are in fact view them as substandard and discriminate against them. The liberal leaders understand what they are doing and do it in order to win the political battle. what liberal policy would gain traction if there was not a poverty problem, especially among minorities to point at. In other words, they have intentionally keeping these people down for political purposes. Liberals should be ashamed of themselves. i am very ashamed that i used to be an enabler before i actually started to help. Liberals are racists, but many of them are too ignorant to realize
