No. You get sick or injured -- the cost of food and gas will be nothing compared to your medical bills. See if you can cut in other areas. Can you get a cell plan with less minutes that's cheaper? Can you downgrade your cable or satellite bill? Start clipping those coupons. Can you car pool to (work, school, practice etc) to save money? Keep a diary one month. Track every penny you spend. If you stop at the gas station to purchase a coke - document it. At the end of the month go over your diary. You will find there are areas where you are wasting money that you can eliminate.

No, we have insurance whether it's auto, health or home just in case something happens. Health insurance is very important. If you don't think you or your family will never become ill I say go for it. In all reality you should maintain some form of health insurance because without that its very slim that you'll receive any care. To help with you budget you can consider reducing the amount of insurance and readjusting your health coverage. Why would you want to save a few hundred dollars throughout the year and pay thousands for some freak accident down the line. The means do not out weigh the odds... Good luck. You may also consider cutting some misc.. spending as well.. Try off brand food and clothing for example

That would be the most foolish thing you could do.

It depends upon your family medical history and whether you feel lucky. I have medical insurance through work, but have never used it. I have never had dental insurance, but my only dental issue in 56 years has been a broken molar last year (a chunk of bone in ground meat), and that was something over $200 for the extraction (less than insurance cost for 30 some years). But about the time you drop your medical insurance is when you will be back here asking, "I have all these medical expenses, lost my job, and my credit is shot, what can I do?" Or "Can I buy medical insurance to cover pregnancy (or whatever pre-existing condition)?"
5 :
You should not cancel your health insurance because medical bills can bankrupt you. Nearly 50% of all bankruptcies are a result of medical bills. You can look into a higher deductible plan and a plan without doctor visits and prescriptions for a copay to lower your premium. Plans with doctor visits are a luxury because you are paying for the visit anyway with a higher premium. HSA plans are a good option. Be very wary of medical discount cards. They are not regulated by the Department of Insurance nor do the people that sell them need to be licensed. This means you have little recourse when you have problems with the plan. If you are tempted by the low price and claims of “save up to 80%” be aware that very few doctors actually take these cards. It does you little good if you have to drive 4 hours to find a doctor that will accept the card. Montana couldn’t find any doctors in the whole state that actually took the card and only one dentist who was on probation for unlawful activities so they banned the sale of the card and fined the company. See this link http://www.insurancejournal.com/news/west/2006/11/22/74554.htm for more information. Many other states are starting to ban these cards as well. Before signing up with any discount plan get a list of doctors. If they won’t give you a list consider it to be a scam. Call the doctors on the list to make sure they’re still taking the card (many don’t even know that they’re listed as a provider) and that they’re accepting new patients.

Cancelling health insurance isn't going to increase your INCOME - it's going to leave you uninsured. Uninsured medical costs are the #1 cause of bankruptcy in the United States. If you want to increase your INCOME, I'd suggest a second job. If you want to cut your expenses, the #1 expense that you can cut back on, is food - starting with eating out, then moving to cooking all from scratch - no prepared/premaid/premixed foods.

hmm you can switch your health insurance to little cheap plan ... here you can find cheapest plan http://tinyurl.com/5zmcsf

I definitely understand your frustration, you are not the only one who faces these type of decisions on a daily basis. I definitely don't recommend having no policy or program in place for "just in case". High deductible plans have been mentioned, another solution however is discounted health and dental programs. Those in conjuction with a health savings account can prove to be more cost effective than insurance ever has. I try my best to spread the word because we do have other choices besides traditional insurance. Many think they have "good insurance" because services are covered at 100%, yet they are paying for those "free" services in the high premiums every month! Not to say all insurance is bad, but if you're not knowledgeable regarding it, you can get ran over. Having a discount program allows you full control of what you pay, because you know exactly what its going to cost you. Its a big leap in whats being considered "consumer-driven" healthcare. You can take a look at our programs at www.mybenefitsplus.com/trhonda2000. Hope this helps, Trhonda

I can imagine a news reporter using your question as a starting point for a story on the challenges people are facing today. It’s a good question. It’s tough to answer, however. On the one hand, health insurance often seems intangible, especially if you don’t use your coverage very often. Food and gas, by contrast, are daily necessities for pretty much all of us. The trouble is that cancelling your coverage can leave you in a fragile position financially. A single unexpected injury or hospitalization can literally bankrupt you these days. I’m not sure if the statistic is still accurate, but I did read a study a few years ago that found that ‘unpaid medical bills’ was actually the leading cause of personal bankruptcy. So, paying out a modest amount monthly to maintain your coverage can give a valuable layer of financial protection - and peace of mind, which is certainly worth something even in today’s economy. But your point is well-taken: health insurance can be expensive. Are there more affordable options available to you? If you’re fairly young and healthy, you may actually have some good options to choose from. If you’re currently covered under an employer-plan and you have pre-existing medical conditions, you’ll probably want to stay put. But otherwise, take a look at what’s available by talking to a licensed agent in your area or visiting eHealthInsurance.com (where I work). You can get quotes from leading companies in your area and compare plan rates and benefits and apply for the one that best matches your needs. If your only other choice is to cancel your coverage entirely, perhaps you’re willing to pay a higher deductible, when/if the worst happens, in order to pay a lower premium month to month? Only you can really answer that, of course. But feel free to call one of our licensed agents for free assistance at 1-800-977-8860. Good luck! Amir M, licensed agent

no- that would be a very dangerous choice. good luck

If a worker gets fired for informing their employer of health food and safety violations

If a worker gets fired for informing their employer of health food and safety violations?
I was fired for something bogus after appropriately informing my employer that there is some health food and safety violation, what Federal and Minnesota laws have they broken? If a coworker writes a letter, or testifies on my behalf, and they are fired or receive retaliation for doing so what laws are also broken? In Minnesota its call the food code and some of the violations were: cat hair all over employees and managers clothing, not wearing a hair net, people had cuts on their hands and they didn’t put a Band-Aid and a glove on, to keep blood out of the food. Some of the safety concerns were broken equipment, missing face shield, gloves. (PPE), “Personal Protection Equipment.”

sounds like discrimination

I don't think they can do that on either regard. Your friend should not be fired for pointing out an 'opps' on the company's regard. You should hire an attorney and so should your friend. I don't know the exact laws but something smells fishy here; no pun intended

What can I do about finding LOTS of expired product at a local health food store

What can I do about finding LOTS of expired product at a local health food store?
I went to a local independantly owned health food store today and was browsing through the aisles. I've worked for a bigger health food store for over 5 years and am familiar with lots of the products that they sold. While browsing through I found LOTS of expired products. In the supplements for example, there were things that expired in 2003, 2005 and 2007. This was in a few different brands. I also found a tea that expired in 2002 and saw little black bugs in one of the bulk bins. Who should or do I need to contact about this? Well Barry C....... I only brought that up meaning that I can tell the difference between old labeling and new. Plus the fact that the product was clearly labeled "EXP 2/2005" or whatever. The store I work for checks their products readily and does not have this problem, so I have not encountered it before. Don't be such a jerk.

What is the best way to save money on groceries when you eat healthy food?

What is the best way to save money on groceries when you eat healthy food?
Groceries are so expensive these days, but health food costs even more. The price of fresh vegetables, turkey, chicken, and lowfat or fat-free foods is outrageous! How do you afford to stay healthy?

You have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T. What kind of cutbacks can you make? For example: I drink bottled water. Now at $1 a bottle on something that covers over 65% of our planet is not smart. So I bought one of those water filters that screw into your faucet. I have bottles that I refil over and over again. I take them to work. Do you have a lot of small appliances around that house that are always on? I cut my electronic bill almost in half by unplugging all the clock radios and night lights. I also bought some of those florescent bulbs that look a lot like a regular bulb. These things use 80% less electricity than regular bulbs. You would be surprised, but these small things add up. I know I was spending money on the water filter and energy efficient bulbs but these things will pay for themselves in a month providing they pertain to you. If you really need the money right away start cutting back on your food costs. Romain noodles cost a dime and they taste just as good as campbells chicken noodle that costs $130 a can. Ok no chicken in romain noodles, but you are probably just missing about 4 tiny pieces of chicken. .Before you know it you will be ahead. And remember you have to start thinking S-M-A-R-T

What's beneficial when it comes to going from a junk food eater to a health food eater

What's beneficial when it comes to going from a junk food eater to a health food eater?
I'm in school all day and too tired to cook when I get home so most of the time, I'll have fast food and sweets. I'm trying so hard to go back to health food like I did earlier last year and the year before. For example, I'm trying to have fruit instead of sweets for dessert, salad instead of a burger, veggies instead of fries, and so forth. I plan on not stopping at a fast food place unless I have absolutely no choice like being on vacation or something and try to give up sweet like I did with coffee and soda last year. I haven't had coffee or soda since last year. I'm proud of myself for that. Can I benefit from this and if so how?

fruits cuz there healthy and sweet.

there is no downside to switching to healthier foods. less fats, salt, simple carbs, etc. you can actually get addicted to fast food. i recently went on weight watchers. i haven,t lost tons of weight; but my energy levels are way up. i ate quite well before starting, but cut out a lot of fats and salt as a result of a reduced caloric intake. i felt the difference within three days

what is the food lovers diet? I am poor and sick with health problems. please help me?
I have lost my daughter in death. I have grandchildren and I would like to stick around to give them a family. I am on disability and it is hard to buy this and pay bills. If this is something that could teach me a way to eat that would turn my health around, my question is, "why is it so hard to get the truth if it is something we were supposed to do anyway?" Is the richer ones the only ones who deserve health?-----Sorry...I hope I haven't offended anyone.

Everyone deserves a healthy, fulfilling life! If you really want to turn your life around, and seriously get rid of many health issues, I strongly recommend turning towards a vegetarian/vegan diet. (if you don't want to go completely vegan which is no animal products at all including milk, eggs, etc... just replace normal milk with almond or soy milk for greater health benefits!) Not only will you be cutting out animal products (Meat contains many harmful antibiotics/growth hormones and artery-clogging fats, and milk has the same!) But you will be forced to really think about what you are putting into your body and you will need to plan your meals to get your nutrients. Research on the topic will yeild many plentiful websites to help you along. A vegetarian diet when done correctly is one of the most healthy ways to live, as you should be consuming mainly vegetables, fruits, and grains. All these things are pure and from the earth, and contain the most antioxidants and disease fighting enzymes than any other food! Cut out all other beverages except water, not only will you be saving money but you will do your body a huge favor as well. And another VERY important thing- make sure you are getting exercise! Even if it is just walking, start small and work up. Exercise rids your body of toxins, and makes you feel tremendously better. I guarantee if you reduce your intake of animal products, greatly increase your intake of whole foods like fruits, veggies and grains, and exercise, and drink only water- you will see a huge difference in the way you feel. I know many people who have had their health problems diminish when following this plan. Good luck!

While fresh produce and meats tend to be a bit pricey at times, they're still cheaper than processed foods, so eating healthy isn't more expensive, especially when considering one often ends up eating less while eating properly. Start by revisiting the basic food pyramid: http://www.mypyramid.gov/ to remind yourself of what food groups you should be eating and especially in what serving size. You don't need to eat exotic and expensive foods if you don't want to or can't afford to. Really focus on what a serving size looks like and how many servings of each you should be eating. Pay careful attention to the grains food group - most people don't remember what a real serving size looks like. A slice of bread is 1 serving, but a bagel which contains significantly more food is 3-4 servings of grains. Beans are a great alternative if fresh meat or canned fish are too expensive. They're still a source of protein and when bought in dried form and made into soup with a few veggies or just cooked it's very economical. Canned or frozen veggies may keep better than fresh and if you're cooking for just 1 person may be more economical since you don't have to worry about produce spoilage. So sorry, but if you can afford to eat at all, then you can afford to eat healthy too. You don't need to buy diet pills or meal replacement bars to eat healthy, just look back to the basic food groups and think about buying more 'simple' foods and fewer processed foods
