Is this true about food and health

Is this true about food and health?
If you eat the same kind of food everyday, you will eventually develop a sensitivity of that food, making you more likely to get sick. So if you eat a couple bananas every day, your body will eventually become sensitive to it, and will not desire bananas anymore, and if you keep eating bananas every day for a few weeks, you are more likely to develop a cold. But everything is like this except water, where water is neutral and must be drinken everyday.

No. That is just ridiculous. There are entire cultures that thrive now and countless throughout history that have thrived on one or two staple foods; rice, potato, wheat, corn, deer, fish, etc.
2 :
That's rubbish. My grandfather was a baker of lovely bread and I have eaten bread every day for as long as I can remember. I still love it and haven't had a cold for well over 2 years (touch wood) Water is essential to health, I am glad I can drink it every day too

Good health-food cookbooks and/or healthy recipes

Good health-food cookbooks and/or healthy recipes?
When I say "healthy," I mean nutritionally rich meals with few artificial ingredients. I've been looking through Google and a few bookstores, but there is SO much material that it's a tad overwhelming. There seems to be a very blurred definition of "healthy" eating which is geared more toward weight loss than intake of essential vitamins and nutrients. I'm more interested in the latter. What's out there? Please include links or places to buy if you make suggestions. Thanks!!

I would recommend any cook book by Ellie Krieger. Krieger has a bachelor's degree in clinical nutrition from Cornell University and has a master's in nutrition from Columbia University. Krieger is a registered dietitian and nutritionist http://books.google.com/books?id=llxTK89FK_UC&printsec=frontcover&dq=ellie+krieger&source=bl&ots=id7S5ztahd&sig=zb2I4PIe20rQ8bNcAQC3h97J3zA&hl=en&ei=X1QaTMzrNsWBlAeHqrGdCg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=15&ved=0CFYQ6AEwDg#v=onepage&q&f=false

The Joy of Cooking is a great resource for delicious recipes. It has been around for over 75 years so you can expect the ingredients to be nothing but natural. I would suggest buying organic foods when cooking, that way you can achieve the healthiest meal possible. Hope you find this a great help! Also, a great book for baking is King Arthur's Flour Whole Grain Baking. The recipes are delicious! I highly recommend this addition to your collection.
3 :
I am in your same situation. I love baking but my mom hates it, because she loves health, and is very nutritionally oriented. I have yet to find a cook book to suit our needs. However I make basic changed to my food, to please her. For instance use extra virgin olive oil instead of butter, or shortening. USe oat bran flour, rather than white, for it has more nutrients and is less processed. I also use spinach instead of lettuce, for it has more nutrients. Another suggestion would be to go to your local health food store, and look at there cookbooks, or ask a store attendant to help you with recipes. Sorry I can not help you more.
4 :
I love the website myrecipes.com and Cooking Light magazine. Actually, myrecipes.com includes recipes from Cooking Light. I like them because all the recipes include the nutritional breakdown, including calories, sugar, etc. In myrecipes.com you can also create your own recipe box to keep your favorites in, print them in a variety of ways and do searches for specific categories. Also, there are great user reviews of the recipes which often include suggestions on changing up the dish. Of course, when you are buying your own ingredients, buying what's in season, organic or non-processed will yield a more healthy end result

Am I harming my dog's health by feeding him table food once in a while

Am I harming my dog's health by feeding him table food once in a while?
My mom says I'm an idiot for feeding my dog table food! She says I'll eventually kill him! This sounds absolutely lame to me, or am I lame?

1 :
noooo give him as much food as he wants!!!
2 :
Nope, actually a little variety in your dog's diet is good, as long as it's not harmful foods like hot sauce or something pure fat, your mom is just being a control freak.
3 :
no I dont think so I give it to my dog
4 :
As long as it is only once in awhile, the dog will be fine. Just avoid chocolate, and sweets.
5 :
No it's a good thing. Unless you feeding him junk food, and obviously no chocolate. Dogs are mammals like you and me. It's not natural for them to be eating the same old processed dog "food" all the time. Nutritional, real food is healthier for everybody, including dogs.
6 :
Don't worry it's completely fine! Just make sure it's only once in a while or around 3 times a week max. Also make sure you don't give him/her Bakers chocolate, avacados, walnuts (or pretty much any nuts) or grapes. Those are the main ones to avoid. You can also google which foods not to give dogs. Hope this helps! :0)
7 :
my mom only feeds the dog left overs.. she says dog food has too much crap in it like crude and dog food killed alot of dogs a couple years ago..
8 :
What kind of table food? Some veggies and stuff is actually pretty good for him. Look up sites on what's good to give your dog to eat that's "table food".
9 :
I personally, feed my dogs from the table all the time. My dogs are healthy. It just depends on what you are feeding them and how much.
10 :
Before there was dog food, dogs ate table scraps. Be careful what you feed him though as there are some things dogs can't eat that we can - for example: chocolate or grapes. Google this and see what is safe for dogs and just don't overdo it.
11 :
There are some food that can kill dogs and some that they are allergic to. For example, they're allergic to (and have trouble digesting) onions and garlic. Grapes and chocolate can kill them. There are others, but those are the main ones that I remember. Be careful!
12 :
I don't know but I heard that it makes there poop stink, more than it does
13 :
psshh, my dog ate a whole bottle of whoppers once when he was a puppy, he is like 7 years old now
14 :
Nah, it's not lame. I choose not to feed my dog table scraps just for the fact that it keeps him from bugging me and my fiancee when we are eating. When we are eating, he knows no difference! (I give him doggie treats tho) Will it kill your dog? Not unless you give him chocolate. By the way, here's a fun fact: Dogs LOVE carrots. Try and give him/her sometime. It's a healthy treat in case you are feeling guilty about giving him/her table scraps.
15 :
Well, it depends on how often "once in a while" actually is, and also depends on exactly what you are feeding him. I give my dog egg (shell, yolk, white - the whole thing), bananas, and carrots. Does that hurt him? No. But if I was giving him pre-sliced sandwich meat, tacos, spiced meats, ice cream, chocolate.... You get the idea. Then it would not do him any good at all. It really depends on exactly what he is getting.
16 :
TBH i think it is more 'natural' for a dog to eat human food than dog meat. wolves became dogs about 15 thousand years ago, since then dogs have eaten what people eat. Dog food was only invented 100 years ago.
17 :
No, but it does breed bad begging habits if you feed him scraps while you are eating.
18 :
No. Just be reasonable, No sharp bones or onions. Most everything else is OK. I would avoid sweets and very salty foods, just like u would for a young child.
19 :
no just give him or her like a little bite it might make it sick if you keep fedding it
20 :
i give my dog bits of my food if i'm eating meat, but only if he's behaving. he knows he gets some if he's good. i can eat with him sitting on my lap && he won't even make a move for it until i offer him some. as long as you're not giving your dog tablescraps as his main food source && the dog isn't disrupting your meals by begging, etc then i really don't see the problem with it. just make sure what you're giving your dog is actually good for him
21 :
you can feed them red apples, meat, ham, and bologna once in a while. but dont give them chicken!!!!
22 :
Depends on what you are giving him... Fruit vegetables and meat are fine.. no salt, no butter and no seasoning.. If you are feeding hot dogs and ham, other junk food, then you are killing your dog. Don't give them things like bologna and ham... Chicken is fine.. no cooked bones at all.
23 :
It depends on what food you are giving him. Pasta, rice and meat and vegetables are perfectly ok and good for the dog. No onions, corn on the cob, grapes, choclolate, sultanas or raisins. They are bad for dogs. There seems to be paranoia on this forum about 'People Food' whatever that means. Good, nourishing food is as good for the dog as it is for people. At least it's not full of corn, wheat, grains and other useless fillers that are found in all but the super premium, expensive dry food and from what I read on here, not too many people are feeding super premium food to their dogs. Added: Definitely never give cooked bones. As for the person who said no chicken. Dogs do very well on a chicken diet. Chicken is an excellent source of protein. Ham and bologna, on the other hand, are processed meats and are not good for the dog.
24 :
Table food is fine. Chicken/turkey/sharp bones & chocolate are the exceptions I can remember- just google search "foods dogs can't eat". Your mom is overreacting, unless there is a specific medicial reason that particular pet doesn't need to be eating table food, in which case you should listen to her.
25 :
Some table scraps are ok for dogs. It is usually avoided though bc human food does not have all of the nutrition that a dog needs and human food is much more fattening that dog food. Plus, human food contains many things that can be highly toxic or even kill your dog. Do NOT give your dog table scraps if it contains any of the following: Chocolate, Tomatoes, Onions, Caffeine, Beer, Avocados, Yeast, Fried Foods, Bones, Grapes, Raisins.... I know there are a few others, just can't think of them right now. Also salt and sugar can cause major health problems for your dog. Many dogs are also unable to process milk and corn. If they can't process either, you will notice that they become very gassy and/or have excessive amounts of fecal matter. Raw carrots and plain baked sweet potato strips are good human foods to feed your dog... and most like them. Peanut butter, liver, boiled liver and plain scrambled eggs are all things your dogs will love that are healthy in moderation. Either way, make sure that the table scraps do not exceed 10% of your dog's diet. Anything more will cause obesity, heart problems, etc.
26 :
never ever feed your dog table scrapes. trust me i know how tempting it can be, but really people food is one of the worst things you can give your dog. it can cause pancreatis quickly in a dog. please don't do it. do your research and talk to your vet about it.
27 :
This depends on what you mean by table food, are you scraping your leftovers into your dogs bowl breakfast lunch dinner or when ever you eat then yes this is not good for dogs, dogs don't need all those spices seasonings salt pepper sauces ect. Some human food is not safe for dogs to eat. However if you are giving your dog carrots green beans squash pasta apple strawberry's blueberry's then fine as long as the food your are giving is not covered in sauces salt pepper seasonings. As a treat if you want to give your dog a bite then give him some unseasoned food. Plain unseasoned cooked pasta chicken beef carrots squash rice. Just no seasonings on the food you are giving..
28 :
i feed my dogs scraps with their dogfood.it cant be bad for them if the lady on its me or the dog isnt against it
29 :
As long as you avoid chocolate, grapes, onions, bread dough...you should be alright. Those are toxic to dogs though. I feed all three of my dogs table food and they haven't had any problems at all their entire lives

What is the best food to feed my 5 year old boxer, who has some minor health problems.

What is the best food to feed my 5 year old boxer, who has some minor health problems.?
I'm currently feeding her Rachel Ray's Nutrish. I took her to the vet today, and was told that she has cholesterol/calcium deposits on her cornea, and the best was to treat this is by switching to a food with less fat. Nutrish has 13% fat. Also, she has a sensitive digestive system, and will have loose stools when her food and she has horrible smelling gas. Any suggestions for this matter? Thank you!

I would consider switching her to Science Diet. They have food specifically for digestive issues and such, as well as weight control. Working at a few vet clinics, I have found most people prefer it, even though it can be pricey.
2 :
The Weight Control and Senior formulas usually have lower fat contents. Innova and Blue Buffalo are good. I certainly don't recommend Science Diet recommended by the previous answer

Do fast food resturants offer health insurance

Do fast food resturants offer health insurance?
I was just wondering after hearing about the lady that worked at Wendy's and hung herself and her kids. I heard it may have been due to PPD, and wondered whether she would have had insurance working at Wendy's..

Yes they do but you have to work full time hours in order to get the benefits.
2 :
I have had relatives who work in fast food. Health insurance is offered to assistant managers and store managers but not regular staff at Taco Bell. Hardee's offered some health insurance to full time employees but the employee paid for it and I don't think the coverage was very big. Wendy's may be similar.

Why are food modifications important to the health of the elderly and the health of the diabetic

Why are food modifications important to the health of the elderly and the health of the diabetic?

They're not. Our bodies were designed to live a long and healthy life simply by eating those foods that were created for us (or that we adapted to, for you evolutionists). Either way, natural foods are far superior to manufactured, processed, enriched, refined, and packaged ones. I was diabetic for years, taking medication, eating a bland low Calorie diet. Then, after much research, I found that I was missing some important nutrients that were essential in lowering my insulin resistance. Once I started eating more fruits, nuts, berries, whole grains, some natural supplements, and a wider variety of vegetables, I was able to stop taking medication. My blood sugar has been normal ever since. December 13, it will have been two years of a happy, healthy, medication free life

Pretty much anything from a fast-food restaurant, sodas, most deserts, etc. Anything with a lot of fat , very high sodium content (700mg+), or very high sugar content is probably not very healthy. High sodium can raise blood pressure, fats will add up, clog your arteries, and raise cholesterol levels, and too much sugar consumption can lead to diseases such as diabetes. Just look at the nutrition label on foods, and check for these various contents, as well as some others, and see if they are reasonable. Common examples of bad food are pizza, ice cream, coke, beef burgers, etc.
2 :
http://youtube.com/watch?v=pFwHYAVSHgI thats a video i just made for my personal fitness class, that tells you how to pick out healthy food by looking at the food labels. like no more than 2% of this or 30% of that, etc. fast food is horrible, soda, any greasy foods, like pizza. all that kind of stuff. or pure sugar foods/candy
3 :
processed food like potato chips, ice cream. Anything with alot of fat- nachos, pizza, lasagna, milk shakes, burgers, fast foood. all that bad stuuff!
