how do college students manage to afford a car on top of tuition, rent, food, utilities, and health insurance

how do college students manage to afford a car on top of tuition, rent, food, utilities, and health insurance?
even with a full time job, its hard to do. and if you don't have a parent to cosign, the most you can get in loans is around 7k/year, that doesn't even cover tuition at a state school in my state! i have no idea how the college kids do it.

Loans, funds, jobs and scraping by. Health insurance I have no idea here we have health care and the university charges you for coverage for dental and everything more. Plus lots of places make you pay for a full meal plans when living in res because everyone choses to spend it all on booze or just another way to get money out of you every chance they get.

Parents.......loans, scholarships.....work.....

Mummy and dada.

They don't. You may think that they all have these "basics" covered, but they really don't. I know that about 50% of the people in my dorms did not have cars, or health insurance, and food was TOP RAMEN and a COKE. Tuition was covered by loans. The one's who did have all these necessities covered were upper-middle class kids who had (2) working parents. It may seem like everyone is well off, but they aren't, trust me

We often hear "health food types" make the case that brown rice is better for you than white rice. I have
looked carefully at the Nutrition Facts on both kinds, and it seems to me that the only advantage brown rice has over white is that it has more potassium. So, why is it better for us. Please don't give a silly answer like "Because I read it in a magazine." It may well be true. I just want to have an honest opinion from someone who really knows.

FIBER !
2 :
its healthier for you because its not milled. milling takes off the 'bran layer' and a lot of nutrients with it. kinda the same reason why wheat bread is healthier than white.
3 :
Brown rice has more B vitamins. Also the brown part (bran) adds fiber and slows the absorbsion of the carbs.
4 :
I am not sure where did you get this information, but it is not correct. It is not just potassium, brown rice has far more vitamin E, Niacin, Folacin, Phosphorous, Magnesium, Thiamin, Selenium, Zinc and Fiber than white rice. I think it tastes better too.
5 :
It's healthier because it isn't milled/refined like the white rice. The milling/refining process strips the rice of it's nutritional value and fiber content. The body treats white rice the same as it would white bread...digest it fast, release heavy amounts of starchy sugars into the blood which turn into fat. The body takes longer to digest the brown rice therefore you don't get the "sugar high" that you would from the white rice. Also since brown rice takes longer to digest it will keep you feeling full longer which means you will end up eating less. In the flavor department...brown rice tastes better and has more texture/body than white rice

For health professionals if you were to attend a presentation on food safety what would you want to learn?
What topics do you feel that you would like to know about? Would you be more interested in the safety of the food supply in the U.S. or food infections such as salmonella, e. coli, etc.

In the US, because our beef, dairy and corn are boycotted for the following reasons. Beef is loaded with Dioxin (our pesticide of choice that is 40,000 times stronger than DDT) and sheep protein, the food we feed them which is contaminated with scrapy(otherwise known as mad cow). Dioxin is an estrogenic mimmicker. Wonder why the breast and prostate cancer epidemic? Dairy is loaded with added IBGF Factor 1 synthesized into injections we've been giving our dairy cows since 1996 called Posilac which has caused infections to the teets from increased milk production and has made the FDA bend the rules as to how many milligrams of puss allowed per vat of milk, which in turn has loaded our puss filled dairy with antibiotics which kills our natural flora in the gut. Posilac is made from MERK and is another estrogenic mimicker. Again, wonder why the breast and prostate cancer epidemic? Corn or corn syrup is now our sugar of choice for all processed foods and sodas, which has been genetically engineered with a pesticide that is also an estrogenic mimicker to cause not only sterility for the insects attacking corn but for our butterflies and bees as well. Being that it is an estrogenic mimmicker, wonder why the estrogen dominance in all of those human hormone panels? To avoid this, look for labels that state NON GMO (Genetically Modified Organism). Our pharmaceutical companies have caused our people to become a cancer/Prozac nation. They've managed to pool the wool over many people's eyes who start to feel depressed or out raged about something they can't quite put their finger on by drugging them and our children with Ritalin which is only 2 molecules off from cocaine and then telling us that its not normal to feel sad or figit and think and to praise Jesus because Christ consciousness will keep you from believing in evolution. Evolution, the very science by which these drugs and GMO inventions have been created in the first place by major scientific corporations and pharmaceuticals the world over. So, we irradiate each other and we irradiate our meat and our nuclear waste is dumped into fields of the commercial crops we eat... and yet no one, and I mean no one speaks out on the news about it. Ya know why? Who owns our media! Every commercial you see is funding our media. Every commerical that says "Ask your doctor about this drug and ask your doctor about that drug" is paying for your news casts. They don't want you to know! So, I'd say the US... Hands down, because I've only touched on the tip of the ice burg as to how arrogant our industries have become in the name of supply and demand. Besides, we have enough agriculture in California alone, to feed the world 7 times over and we refuse to share. It's like the old story, "The Emporors New Clothes" everyone was swindled, but it took the eyes of innocence to point out the contrary. This time, its going to take the eyes of the wise and a whole lot of eyes, because there is a fire... And if you people don't smell the smoke, then complacancy has taken you over and you will have to watch helplessly, as each family member comes down with an autoimmune or cancer that the medical profession has not and still does not have any answers for. You know how I know they don't, because chemo and radiation have the same statistics since 1934 and auto immune diseases went from rare to over 80 classified epidemics and the US ranks number 37 in disease management. Why do doctors avoid this subject? The medical text books are sponsored by the meat and dairy industry! How convenient. Only the proper nutritional tools allows the body to heal itself and that is what the pharmaceutical industry doesn't want you to know. Viva la Revolucion!

As a health professional I would expect to hear balanced information on additives like MSG, aspartame, fructose and other sweeteners, and not the industry bottom line. I would expect food handling and storage guidelines and rationales provided (and not from some old textbook written in 1927). A balanced view on GM crops/foods and the implications for human health and the environment would also be good

Fish oil --- I usually have no confidence in the "snake oil" sold in health food stores, but I have read some
very respected articles about the value of fish oil. What is a conservative daily intake of this suppliment?

1 tablet per day. my dad and i both take it and we're in good health
2 :
Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (canola, soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Dosing is based off of a number of studies and I have attached a very good article including information from clinical trials. It is really dependent on what you wish to use it for (lower triglycerides vs. prevention of cardiovascular disease). For example, a number of studies have shown benefits appear to be dose-dependent, with effects at doses as low as 2 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day. Higher doses have greater effects, and 4 grams per day can lower triglyceride levels by 25-40%. Please see my source so you can obtain the dose you wish for the conditions you want to treat/prevent

Is our health problems our own fault or the food industries

Is our health problems our own fault or the food industries?
Is it reasonable to expect the public to follow things like food guides to prevent obesity and food related diseases OR should the food industry be only providing healthful foods and stop promoting unhealthy foods to help the consumers? I know how i feel i just want to see others opinions :)

you need to watch for your health all the way. the food market is very huge and the food manufacturing companies want to gain profit they will not give you there secret menu of the food and only the taste is more interesting in it so the consumers get addicted to it and buy it , if it healthy or will get u any side effect this not the matter they need only profit best of luck and always read before you eat

Frankly, I think it's each person's own responsibility to make sure they're eating properly and maintaining a proper exercise routine. Much as we may blame the food industry, becoming obese is a gradual process that can be stopped at any point. It's not something that happens overnight, and so to become obese, one must make a conscious choice to ignore the weight gain until it's reached a critical point. In light of this, when one acknowledges this weight gain, it's not as though there are no healthy options available. It's a matter of deciding that you don't want to be unhealthy because of your weight. Also, there are alternatives to buying the unhealthy food the food industry promotes. Bread, for example, is something that a health-conscious person can make on their own. Fruits, vegetables and meats can all be bought at farmers markets and such where they are grown locally. Most grocery stores also now carry organic foods. There's no lack of alternatives to unhealthy foods, it's just that people make a choice not to pursue those alternatives.
