Why can't we just have the government give everybody an equal income and food, water, shelter, and health care

Why can't we just have the government give everybody an equal income and food, water, shelter, and health care?
I'm a liberal and I think the government should just give everybody all of these things. I took an economics class back in middle school but I don't remember much from it

well libs love to act like they care and want to give peoples money away but the fact is we need to work for a living and stop waiting for someone to give them money..

Because competition spurs quality products, services, and ideas. There's much, much more. Like a book's worth on why this fails... but you can look at some examples that are relatively close... like communism. Cheers.

We don`t have the energy for the growth needed to have that kind of equality.

People provide different levels of work. Disregarding that some people will get shortchanged and some people will gain an undue benefit, it will completely destroy all initiative to produce new products which will put us further behind China than we already are.

It shows.

Because that has been tried. It is called socialism and it does not work. Those that run the government then dole out more for themselves and the common man or woman is the worse off. It also discourages creativity and productivity. If you are guaranteed everything, then where is the incentive to work?

You are a very good troll.

that is because our value system is eroded, people have become selfish, politicians lack ethics, become greedy and totally lack culture. We do not revolt against injustice. We meekly submit to all unfairness happening around.

You are a uneducated republican

You should know that fascist fabian socialist John Dewey started our public school system. Google John Dewey Frankfurt school and it will turn your blood cold. The end result of letting the Govt. have that power is death. Stalin, Mao, Mussolini, Hitler all killed their people to cull the herd. That is what Obamacare is all about

25On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" 26"What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" 27He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind'[a]; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'[b]" 28"You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live." 29But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?" 30In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. 31A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. 32So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. 34He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him. 35The next day he took out two silver coins[c] and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.' 36"Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?" 37The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."

Well, we might be able to do that, but I don't think the majority of Americans would like the idea of becoming a communist country. VIVA LA RAZA!

Live with Socialism or Communism as a way of life and you might change your tune. People who actually are responsible for their own lives and their own choices have a problem with being controlled and ruled by others. I want no part of your world. Why not move to a Nation that practices your "dream" and see how much better you had it here?

the taxes required for this would kill the economy and drive businesses to relocate to foreign countries.

You really want big daddy to make choices for you? Part of the problem with this mindset is the liberal cure for this endless malaise is a very large authoritarian government that regulates and manages society through a cradle to grave agenda of redistributive caretaking. It is a government everywhere doing everything for everyone. The liberal motto is “In Government We Trust.” To rescue the people from their troubled lives, the agenda recommends denial of personal responsibility, encourages self-pity and other-pity, fosters government dependency, promotes sexual indulgence, rationalizes violence, excuses financial obligation, justifies theft, ignores rudeness, prescribes complaining and blaming, denigrates marriage and the family, legalizes all abortion, defies religious and social tradition, declares inequality unjust, and rebels against the duties of citizenship. Through multiple entitlements to unearned goods, services and social status, the liberal politician promises to ensure everyone’s material welfare, provide for everyone’s healthcare, protect everyone’s self-esteem, correct everyone’s social and political disadvantage, educate every citizen, and eliminate all class distinctions. With liberal intellectuals sharing the glory, the liberal politician is the hero in this melodrama. He takes credit for providing his constituents with whatever they want or need even though he has not produced by his own effort any of the goods, services or status transferred to them but has instead taken them from others by force. Personally, I like self-reliance and freedom. Communism is a tyranny! MR

You should remember enough to know liberals do not want any such thing. That would mean 20 thousand children would no longer starve to death daily.http://borgenproject.org

Because we the people do not want the government to do that. In the UK, the Green Party have advocated a similar system, called a Citizen's income. The link below goes into it. I hope you find it of interest.

How long have you lived in la la land? First, in order for a government to "give", first they must take, because gov't produces nothing of its own. Who will gov't take from? The rich, you say? How long can you rob the rich before they are no longer rich? Why would anyone strive to become rich when the fruits of their effort will be taken from them? Second, why do you assume that the gov't is honest and altruistic? How many people attain a position of authority without owing a favor to someone? How many people with authority remain uncorrupted by it? Third, some people have greater needs than others. Who decides how much is enough? This is why socialism/communism doesn't work. People aren't perfect, and those systems fail when they run into reality
