Is brown rice a complete food? Can one live on brown rice and water and survive in reasonably good health

Is brown rice a complete food? Can one live on brown rice and water and survive in reasonably good health?
If I am not mistaken, poor Asian people have survived on rice with very little else. Or is this an urban myth? Thanks all for your serious input. Ok, don't worry! I am not going on a rice diet. Asians eat (or used to eat) primarily rice and veg.,fruit and some protien (fish or chicken). How important is rice in the diet of those people? Thanks all.

Brown rice is not a complete food. It can be a subsistence food, but this is a big reason malnutrition diseases are common in the poor rural areas of Asia. Important vitamins and nutrients are missing, that would usually be supplemented with meat and vegetables. This is one reason China is a big proponent of genetically modified rice - that has the extra nutrients programmed into it.

You can survive, you may not live well. Rice, while it does have some nutrients, it doesn't have all the nutrients your body needs to remain healthy. You will start to lose bone mass, muscle mass, fat, eventually your internal organs will start to break down. How healthy do those people look in pictures? And think about how many teeth they have. When you're not getting adequate nutrients, your bones and teeth stop receiving them and your bones are the primary resource for stored nutrients in the body. I wouldn't advise it.

Brown rice is not a complete food, it lacks sufficient quantities of an amino acid to make a complete protein. But it just so happens that soy and beans (navy beans, peanuts, lentils, mung beans, etc) are high in the amino acid that rice is missing. By combining rice or any grain with soy and/or beans, you get a complete protein equal to that of meat. This is called "complementary protein", many vegetarian sites have information about it. Brown rice and water isn't a diet you could live on. Brown rice, soy or lentils, and water is, though you'd need fruits and vegetables to get your vitamins.

No...you can survive in desprerate times yes..but you aren't going to be healthy for long. NOW..brown rice and almost any type of bean contains all 12 amino acids. You need to get all 12 amino acids to be healthy. They are critical for good cellular health
